Mission Statement.
Transgender Portal exists to provide a starting point and ongoing guide that will assist anyone in the process of educating themselves about the psychology, issues, and various organizations of the transgender community. The main focus of this site is on those persons who know little or nothing about the transgender perspective and want to find out more as clearly and efficiently as possible.
It is the specific goal of Transgender Portal to:
-
1)provide a cross-section of introductory educational materials on-site, and
-
2)to serve as a single inclusive “hub” of links to educational and organizational transgender resources, making all of these more accessible to anyone who is searching on the internet.
What Transgender Portal Isn’t
No single organization or website can speak for the entire transgender population, because it is comprised of many individuals and groups that represent a great deal of human diversity. It’s important for you to understand that as your humble web mistress I will never speak FOR the transgender population. But I do seek to assist everyone in their educational efforts to learn ABOUT the transgender perspectives that exist, albeit often invisibly, all around us.
**Important Disclaimer**
Please keep in mind that I am not a licensed therapist of any kind, although I do have a passion for education and did earn a degree in it in 1969.
In particular, the introductory educational pamphlets I have written and provided on The Basics page are my personal best shot at concise, simplified overviews of a complicated and controversial topic. I have pursued the assistance of specialized transgender psychologists and therapists in the development and maintenance of these pamphlets and my book. These have been years in the making, and will be updated as the knowledge base continues to grow. Nonetheless these pieces are personal perspectives and should not be taken as “gospel.”
As for a personal background, I am myself transgender, having come to an understanding of this elusive yet relentlessly haunting truth in 1986 at the tender young age of 39. I have been seeking to learn and articulate the transgender perspective since then. I am now dedicating my life full time to transgender education and advocacy.
If you are a professional and would like to share your perspective with me, I welcome your input eagerly. I want any introductory pieces to be as informative yet concisely palatable as possible in dealing with an ever-growing knowledge base on transgender issues. When it comes to human psychology, there are precious few absolutes. In the end I believe that it is transgender people themselves who will most accurately interpret and articulate the diversity of human identity.
A Community Effort.
I sincerely invite all persons and organizations involved in transgender education to please contact me and I will continue to expand this site to be as comprehensive as possible. By making our diverse voices and perspectives readily accessible through a single guide, all organizations have a better chance of being located and therefore able to contribute to the long-overdue integration of human diversity into our culture.
If you are involved in a transgender educational site, please add a link to Transgender Portal and I will be sure to do the same for you if I haven’t already done so. Cross-linking will yield better search engine results so that your site can be found more efficiently.
If you know of any existing internet site not listed on Transgender Portal that focuses on transgender education, please email that link to me and I will follow up on it. Every effort will be made to keep Transgender Portal current and inclusive.
Thank you for making the effort to learn about human diversity. ~Claire Ruth Winter
